Christian Polygamy is NOT Mormon PolygamyWhile Mormons may choose to define themselves as a Christian denomination, even as non-Mormons who are Christians would vehemently disagree, there is absolutely neither any question nor debate that....
When the word,
"polygamy"
is preceded by the adjective, "Christian", the two-word combination creates a singular meaning. That combined singular meaning is exclusively, "Christian Polygamy".
It is not ever referring to "Mormon Polygamy".
That combined singular meaning of "Christian Polygamy" does not ever deal with the question of what is or is not "Christian" by itself (such as in the question of whether or not Mormon is actually "Christian"). Rather, that singular meaning is only about defining what is (and/or is not) "Christian Polygamy" exclusively.
And so, again,
Christian Polygamy and Mormon Polygamy have completely separate and different REASONS for their beliefs from each other. Christian Polygamy is based solely upon the Old and New Testament Scriptures as they were written in their original languages. Conversely, Mormon Polygamy is based upon the additional "scriptures", "revelations", and discourses of the Latter Day Saints (e.g, "Doctrine and Covenants 132", the exclusively Mormon doctrine of so-called "celestial marriage", and Brigham Young's Discourse on Birth Control, et al.) Christian Polygamy and Mormon Polygamy have two completely separate and different HISTORIES. Christian Polygamy as a movement is a modern phenomenon which began in the 1990s. Mormon Polygamy began well over 150 years earlier, back in the early-to-mid 1800s. It would not ever be accurate to suggest that Christian Polygamy and Mormon Polygamy "descended" from one or the other. Since Mormon Polygamy began well over a century before the modern phenomenon of Christian Polygamy, it would not ever be accurate to suggest that Mormon Polygamy is a "subset" of Christian Polygamy. Likewise, since Christian Polygamy does not accept any of the REASONS for polygamy according to the beliefs of Mormon Polygamy, it would not ever be accurate to suggest that Christian Polygamy was a "subset" of Mormon Polygamy. For these reasons, it is not ever accurate to ever suggest, say, or even consider "Mormon Polygamy" as if it is a denominational variation or "descendant" of "Christian Polygamy", and vice versa.
It therefore bears repeating yet one more time,
Not ever. |
